7-OH vs. Kratom Powder — The Real Difference

1. Source and concentration

​

• Regular kratom powder (from Mitragyna speciosa leaves) contains about 1–2% total alkaloids, most of which are mitragynine, not 7-OH.

​

• 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a secondary metabolite—a small fraction (typically <0.05% of the leaf by weight**).

​

• In natural leaf form, that means you’d need roughly a 100:1 ratio of kratom powder to get the same 7-OH content found in one isolated tablet.

• So, if one tablet has 15 mg of 7-OH, you’d need about 1.5 g of pure alkaloid content, which would come from ~150 g of raw kratom leaf—far more plant matter than most people could tolerate orally.

2. Potency and pharmacology

• Mitragynine (the main alkaloid) is a partial μ-opioid receptor agonist—weaker than morphine, with a ceiling effect that limits respiratory depression.

• 7-Hydroxymitragynine, however, is 10–20× more potent at those receptors, which is why concentrated 7-OH extracts act more like a pharmaceutical opioid than traditional kratom tea or powder.

• That’s why users feel a faster onset and stronger effect, but also why high-dose or mixed-use situations (alcohol, benzos, opiates) can turn dangerous. 

3. Purity and side effects

• Raw kratom powder includes dozens of other alkaloids (paynantheine, speciogynine, speciociliatine, etc.). Many of them cause nausea, jitteriness, or headaches and limit absorption of the active compounds.

• Purified 7-OH removes those “gross” alkaloids, giving a cleaner pharmacological profile—but also removes natural safety buffers. In raw powder, it’s physically hard to take enough leaf to overdose; with synthetic 7-OH, you can cross that threshold in one swallow. 

4. Bottom line

• Kratom powder is a weak, mixed-alkaloid botanical—self-limiting, messy, and hard to overuse fatally.

• 7-OH isolate is a precision-extracted opioid-like molecule—far cleaner, far stronger, and far easier to misuse at high dose.

• Used correctly, it can help people transition off opiates with fewer side effects. Used recklessly, especially with alcohol or sedatives, it behaves much closer to a prescription opioid.

The natural kratom powder is about 1% alkaloid overall, and less than 0.05% of that is 7-OH. So the purified molecule is roughly 100–200× stronger per gram. It removes the other plant alkaloids that make you nauseous, but that also removes the natural “safety buffer,” which is why overdose risk rises when people stack it with alcohol or benzos.

7-Hydroxymitragynine works because it occupies the same opioid receptors as fentanyl or oxycodone, but only partially activates them — relieving withdrawal and pain without triggering the full addictive or respiratory-depressant effects. It acts as a biochemical transition compound: strong enough to stabilize the brain’s opioid system, yet self-limiting enough to let recovery take hold.
